Well here's the old codger getting involved again and mouthing off.
I remember when I was a kid and we went to church it meant getting dressed up in our Sunday best. And Mom wore her pretty dress and Dad had on a suit and tie and everybody dressed in their Sunday best.  Boy it was something and sure gathered a lot of respect and as the pastor used to say, "that's how we respect the Lord."
Don't see that much anymore.  I wonder if the Pastor would lead out with a nice suit and the pastors wife and children would wear their Sunday best and if the pastor would encourage the congregation to wear their Sunday best (and I know some folks can't afford a suit although most women do have a pretty dress.  And a pair of slacks are not too expensive, I bought a pair of suntan slacks for $9.00 at a store yesterday and a nice shirt with a tie is not too expensive) and the pastor could teach his flock about respect for the Lord.  It wouldn't be long before the church was too nice a place for  these kooks to come into with there insane ideas and shoot up the place.  They would be too afraid of the GOOD people and besides the good people would have better concealment without anybody knowing.  I wore a suit when I was older and a policeman and I carried and nobody was the wiser.  A Pastor even asked me one time if I was carrying and I asked him if he saw me carrying.  That was the end of the conversation.
Anyway, that's just this old codger's observation for what it's worth.

For carry at services I use a pants-pocket holster with a J-frame sized Rossi .38.  Even if someone notices the bulge it's about the same as a billfold and a lot of guys carry their billfolds frontside nowadays to avoid old-man sciatica.

God imbued us with a natural tendency to self defense.  He must have meant for us to use it or He would have blunted it, somehow, or forbidden it.  He did neither, so I intend to use it.

The old saw about having a gun and no needing it trumps needing a gun and not having it helps me justify in my own mind carrying at services.

Big Mickey,  No need to appeal to natural law to justify armed self-defense.  The bible makes reference to use of lethal force against intruders in Exodus; there's no blood guilt for killing an intruder at night when true intentions are difficult to determine.  And all these references to "turning the other cheek" involve references to verbal insults and slights... not lethal threats.

Thanks.  I wasn't aware of any particular Biblical reference.

Back in the 90's when I worked as the investigator for a law firm, I also taught 1st grade Hebrew classes at the synagogue.  One day the Rabbi asked me if I was armed, and I replied to the affirmative.  His response was that whenever I was there was the only time he truly felt safe and knew that the lives of the children would be in good hands.  He gave me permission to always carry no matter whether I was teaching or going to services.  He never again asked me that question but always had a smile when he saw me enter, as I knew exactly what he was thinking.
I have never been there and not been armed.  As some of you may know, I always carry either (2)Glock 30SF's 45ACP or (2)Glock 38's in 45GAP.  I would not hesitate to defend the congregants should the need ever arrise.
During the High Holy days of Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur we have an "unarmed" security officer who is stationed outside of the synagogue and the temple also has one.  I figure the only thing he will do is let me know there is trouble when I hear the first shots fired that will take him out, so I don't count on any help from him.  To my knowledge, I am the only armed congregant.
If you add in all the synagogue and Jewish community centers that have been hit over the yrs., it would vastly increase the number of houses of worship that have had problems.  I don't want mine to be one of them.
Good luck and as always stay safe.   Cool
