I feel that if you are going to carry a firearm, you should
consider carrying other items for emergency situations.  Not all
emergencies require deadly force and it seems silly to only
prepare for one type of problem.

You can whistle louder and longer than you can yell.  The
exertion of extended bouts of yelling or calling can leave you
weak and winded. Instead, whistles can be used for an extended
time by those who are weak or injured.  The sound of a whistle
can tell a human ear the direction from which it
originates. Conversely, the sound of a human voice calling out
can be muted and dispelled by leafy cover.

I like the pealess whistles, I once overblew a whistle and it
made no noise at all. So now several fox40 whistles.  I own the
classic and mini and am looking to buy a Sharx and perhaps a Micro

If you are interested in a striking tool I like the "The Travel
Wrench", easy to deploy, wont slip from your hand if your fingers
are slippery. Also its not "pointy" so I hope if I am ever in a
court room this will look more defensive then offensive.

It is interesting to note that these products each affect a
different sense, sight, hearing, touch, etc.

For a cheaper substitute, try a Mini Maglight.  They are starting to make and sell them with LED bulbs nowadays.  I think mine (with a standard bulb) was $9.99 at Lowes.

When you're stuck someplace like NYC or NJ, carrying items like a whistle, a knife, or some sort of striking object that does not appear to be an object designed for striking, makes sense.  I always like to consider, though, effectiveness and going to court later.

If I'm in a situation where I'm carrying a whistle, the chances of my being able to flee towards safety seem to me to be better than being able to draw attention of others to assure my safety or scaring the BG off.  A whistle to guide the cops to me after a shooting doesn't sound like a bad deal, though; on the cell phone, I'd tell the dispatcher, I'm the guy blowing the whistle like crazy.  It might help keep me from getting shot by Officer Too Young.

In court, what do you say when the plaintiff's attorney (BG or BG's family) asks:  Why didn't you use your whistle/knife/pepper spray/etc; was it really necessary to shoot this poor boy?  How do you answer why you didn't use something besides deadly force to deal with the issue?

That doesn't mean, of course, that you should not carry anything else.  It just means that you need to think through how you're going to deal with various scenarios and how to "prep" your attorney to ask you the right questions before plaintiff's attorney does so you can inoculate the jury.

BTW, a small flashlight is often as effective as a roll of nickels in a fistfight and also works well as a striking implement when the end is used.  That's why I like the Mini Maglight -- it's just about the same size as a Kubotan stick.

For a really cheaper good one.  Join the NRA and receive a gift of a pocket LED that operates on one AA battery and fits in your pocket.  Lot of light at night.   I use mine when I walk my dogs and don't have to carry a big light anymore.  Plenty good for combat distances.  Had to do battle with a nasty coon the other night who wanted a piece of my little Beagle.  Lighted up real fine and my .380 did what was necessary.  Glad I live in the country.
BM I used a minimag for years as a self defense tool when jumped in a bar or other close encounter.  Had training as if the minimag was kubotan stick.  Works good at disabling a drunk and a big mouth.  Thanks for mentioning the minimag.
When I was active in S & R I taught classes to folks on how to stay found in the woods.  The most important tool was the whistle, because the voice wears out to fast and the voice doesn't carry like a whistle.  Whistles were donated by the Marine Board and were the type of whistles that the Coast Guard recommends and they are pretty loud.   That being said, I think I would rather back out or even run if given the chance, although I still carry the above whistle on my key ring. It's flat and small and fits into the pocket real well.
